American Christian School Has Four State Champions in Speech
April 18, 2011 – Making another strong showing, the
ACSB Speech and Debate team
was 3A runner-up to Haskell High School at the OSSAA State Speech and Debate Tournament. In spite of the fact that ACSB had four first places out of the thirteen events, more than any other school, they still trailed Haskell by four points in the end. “We actually earned more points than last year when we took first,” noted
Coach Brad Swygard
who is also Pastor of Grace Baptist Church, “but Haskell has been working hard to beat us and this year they did. My hat is off to them. Still, I could not be more pleased with the performance of our team.”
A Speech tournament works like a swim meet or track meet. There are thirteen different events, and how individuals do in each event adds overall points to the team. There were 29 schools competing in Class 3A. ACSB earned 42 sweepstakes points, winning medals in 11 of their 15 entries. Among these were four State Champions out of 13 events. This was the sixth straight year that ACSB took first in Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking. This was the fourth straight year ACSB took first in Policy Debate, the third time ACSB won first in Humorous Duet Acting, and the first time they took first in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking. Latta High School had two State Champions. The other seven events were distributed among the other 29 schools.
In Foreign Extemp, sophomore Derek Chisum took the first place medal. Senior and Team Captain, Cara McIntire garnered the first ever gold medal in Domestic Extemp for the school. Cara and her brother Tucker carried on the first place tradition in Policy Debate, not losing any of their seven rounds and 13 judge’s ballots. This is Cara McIntire’s second gold in this event. In Humorous Duet Acting, the team of KaLeigh Long and Hannah Turner stole the show with their rendition of Alice in Wonderland, earning ranks of first from all three judges in their final round.
In Policy Debate, the team of Joel Swygard and Kevin Jarrell were quarterfinalists. In Lincoln Douglass Debate, Derek Chisum also was a quarterfinalist. Hannah Turner placed second behind Chisum in Foreign Extemp and also took fifth in Humorous Interpretation. KaLeigh Long placed second with her Dramatic Interpretation about Human Trafficking. David Bruce placed sixth in Prose Interpretation. Joel Swygard was also a finalist in Domestic Extemp.
ACSB’s first trip to State was in 2002 with just one Policy Debate and one Lincoln Douglass entry. Swygard and the assistant coach Sarah Eppinger are amazed at how well the team has progressed in ten years. ACSB has been in the top three 3A teams in the state for six years, with this year closing their string of three firsts as a team. They have also been successful in getting students to the National Tournament three out of the past four years. “People tell me I have built a program, said Swygard, “but I say I am more like a truck driver who delivers prefabricated homes than a carpenter. These kids are incredibly talented and gifted by God.”
