Christian education is not just providing a safe environment from negative influence and violence where a prayer and some Bible verses are added on to the usual approach to education. A Christian philosophy of education reworks the whole educational process and framework for understanding because God is the source of all truth. Proverbs 1:7 says that the “fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.”
A Christian approach to education starts from the concept that all truth is God’s truth and no idea, concept, or subject matter can be fully understood unless it is related to the God who created it. Thus, God is not just discussed in Bible classes but also in History, Literature, Math and the Science classes. All things are studied and evaluated in light of the truth of the Word of God.
The goal of this approach is to teach students a Biblical worldview or understanding of the universe in which we live. That worldview self-consciously reasons about and integrates all knowledge because true knowledge is about a God-created world. A Biblical worldview also teaches students how to think critically and communicate effectively within the truth of that worldview.
There are Bible classes that are taught where the basic knowledge of the Christian worldview is developed. In addition to this, there are daily devotionals and group chapels to help develop Christian character. But the knowledge of God learned in those activities is then integrated into every subject area.
One other key concept in Christian education is that it is the parents’ right and responsibility to educate their children. A Christian school comes along side the parents to help them, not take away their authority. Though they may delegate some authority to a school, the parents maintain the responsibility for their children’s education. | |
